DHAKA, Nov 24, 2024 (BSS) - Jatiya Nagarik Parishad (JNP) leaders today urged the interim government to reform the constitution in line with religious values and equality as part of the government’s ongoing reform programmes in post-uprising Bangladesh.
They made the call at a roundtable discussion titled ‘Proposal of Constitution Reform’ held at a city hotel.
Barrister Firdausur Rahman put forward the proposals on behalf of the parishad.
Justice (retd) Faisal Mahmud Faizee, former Secretary SM Jahurul Islam, Mufti Harun Izhar, Prof. Hye Sikdar, writer Rezaul Karim Roni, Asif Mahtab Uttsa, Eng. Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan, Prof. Dr Mohammad Sarwar Hossain and Prof. Mohammad Abdul Mannan, among others, took part in the discussion.
The discussion outlined the development of a just and fair government system, where important issues such as democratic accountability, national unity and social cohesion are prioritized.
In the discussion, specific recommendations are also made for clear distribution of powers, tenure, balance, responsibilities and roles of prime minister and president.
The proposal also includes recommendations to ensure protection of citizens from extra-judicial harassment and disappearance, protection of personal information in the light of technological developments and right to privacy by adding new articles to the Constitution.
