DINAJPUR, Jan 26, 2025 (BSS) - Coal production from Barapukuria coal mine under Parbartipur Upazila of the district was began today, 10 days before the scheduled time.

“Coal extraction from the new 1305 no phase has begun around 12 am today (Saturday) on an experimental basis,” said General Manager of Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Limited (BCMCL).

On November 30 last year, authorities stopped the coal production as the stock of coal has been exhausted. But, the coal mine authority expected that the coal production would possible to begin from first week of February this year after finishing development works of the new coal phase.

Around 15,00-2,000 tonnes of coal would be possible to extract per day from the new 1414 no phase on the first week of the coal extraction,  said the GM of Barapukuria coal mine. Later the coal extraction would be 3,000-35,00 tonnes per day, he added.

The production of the coal has been started before 10 days of the scheduled time and it was possible due to the directives of the Petrobangla and the Board of Directors of BCMCL and joint efforts of BCMCL consortium employees and local labours for supplying coal to the Barapukuria thermal power plant for uninterrupted power supply, said the GM.

The coal production target from the new phase is around 3.95 lakh tones, which will be extracted till June 2025, said the GM.
Earlier, nearly 4.81 lakh tonnes of coal were produced from 1414 no phase against accumulated coal extraction of 3.95 lakh tones, which was 22 percent more than the targeted coal production.
