Govt promoting alternative to single-use plastics: Rizwana

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 26, 2025 (BSS) - The government has been working to produce wooden products as an alternative to single-use plastics, Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said here today. 

Bangladesh Forest Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC), under the Ministry of Environment, will manufacture various wooden products using eco-friendly technology, she said.

Rizwana made these remarks while addressing a discussion with officials and employees of BFIDC in the port city.

She emphasized the need for enhancing expertise in sustainable wood production and processing to ensure the proper utilization of forest resources.

The environment adviser said BFIDC should focus on research to establish sustainable management, as the responsible use of renewable resources will shape the future of the forest industry.

The meeting was attended, among others, by BFIDC Chairman Md. Nasir Uddin, Chattogram Regional Forest Conservator Molla Rezaul Karim, Bangladesh Forest Academy Director Md. Aminul Islam, BFIDC General Manager Jahan Ara and Chattogram Rubber Division General Manager A.M. Shahjahan Sarker.

They discussed the challenges and potential of the forest industry, highlighted the need for policy support from the government, and shared their opinions on future initiatives.

Earlier, Rizwana visited the BFIDC industrial unit at Kalurghat, Chattogram. She also visited the Forest Academy in Chattogram and instructed the authorities concerned to impart updated training to forest officials.

Later, addressing another programme at Central Shaheed Minar of Chittagong University, the adviser underlined the importance on carrying out research works in various areas especially in science and social science sectors for the welfare of people.  

Jamal Nazrul Islam Mathematics and Physical Science Research Center organized the programme on the occasion of 'Chattogram Research and Innovation Fair- 2025.
CU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yahya Akhtar presided over the function while its Pro- Vice-Chancellors Shamim Uddin Khan and Prof. Kamal Uddin, Dean of the Faculty of Science Al-Amin, Trustee of the AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation M Nurul Alam, Prof. Kamrul Hasan Mamun of   Dhaka University and Jamal Nazrul Islam Research Management Center member Sadaf Saj Siddiqui, among others, addressed the function.
