Govt gives free legal aid to over 11.68 lakh poor, helpless people

DHAKA, Feb 26, 2025 (BSS) - A total of 11,68,947 poor, helpless and financially indigent people have been provided with legal assistance at government expense through National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) from 2009 to January 2025.

This information has been revealed in a report published in the website of NLASO.

The report said a total of 11,68,947 poor, helpless and insolvent people have received legal assistance at government expenses.

Among the service recipients, 28,611 people got free legal aid through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, 9,27,525 through the Legal Aid Offices of the country’s 64 districts, 29,075 through the Dhaka and Chittagong Workers' Legal Aid Cells, and 1,83,736 people received free legal aid through the National Legal Aid Organization's designated hotline call center number 16430 (toll free).

Before the creation of the national helpline, 17,328 people were provided legal services at government expense through the hotline.

This service has been provided at government expense under the 'Legal Aid Act' with the aim of providing legal aid to financially insolvent and incompetent people seeking justice in the country.

The activities of the National Legal Aid Services Organization are carried out under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
