DHAKA, March 15, 2025 (BSS) - National Citizens' Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam today said his party's position on reforms was highlighted in the meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"We focused on reform process and state of democracy through after August 5," he told reporters after the meeting in a city hotel.

Nahid said they informed Guterres that the foundation for fundamental reforms must be laid during this government and all political parties must come to a consensus.

"We have talked about the speedy implementation of the July Charter. Our position on constitutional reform is that the constitution must be reformed through the Constituent Assembly. Otherwise, constitutional reform through the parliament will not be sustainable," he said.

During the meeting, Guterres said political parties should come to an agreement and come to a consensus keeping in mind the true sense of democracy.

"We consider elections as a process of reform, as a continuation of reforms. Elections without any reform or reform will not be of any use. All other political parties also agree with this. The differences here are when the reforms will be implemented, how soon or after the elections will be held. We think that if it is implemented within the July Charter, the differences will be resolved and we will be able to come to a consensus," he said.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul, Information and Broad Casting Adviser Mahfuz Alam, heads of different reform commissions and Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Monir Haider joined the meeting.

Country representatives of various UN bodies were present.
