DHAKA, April 20, 2025 (BSS) - Press Institute of Bangladesh's (PIB) fact checker Bangla-Fact, has found several newspapers misquoted Social Welfare Adviser Sharmeen Soneya Murshid in their reports on her recent comment relating to the 1971 Liberation War.

The Bangla-Fact said several mainstream newspapers carried the misleading report particularly fabricating their headlines which was massively spread subsequently among netizens.

According to the misleading reports appeared on April 19 Murshid had said "2024 occurred since there 1971 politics was wrong".

"As a matter of fact, she did not make any such comment," Bangla-Fact said.

The fact checker said the adviser actually had said there were flaws in subsequent 50 years of politics after 1971.

"What she said was 'the country became independent through the Liberation War in 1971. But thereafter we could not engage the valiant freedom fighters. We could not keep them healthy. The freedom fighters had to go back to their villages in bare hands and bare feet," the fact checker said.

It said Murshid also said "the country too could not grow in the past 50 years. Democracy, parity, justice - all remained out of the reach. Definitely there were flaws in our politics. Since that politics was wrong, '24 happened".

According to Bangla-Fact mainstream newspapers like the Jugantor, Janakantha, Jaijai Din, Inquilab, and TV channels including RTV and Ekushey TV and over 10 news portals carried the reports fabricating her comments.

Its investigation found the Jugantor newspaper first uploaded the report with fabricated headlines at 6.32 PM on April 19 while the other media outlets subsequently carried the identical headlines.
