DU administration mourns death of Shammo

DHAKA, May 14, 2025 (BSS) - The Dhaka University (DU) administration has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) from the 2018-19 academic session.

According to a press release issued by Dhaka University, Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER), was stabbed to death by miscreants in the Suhrawardy Udyan area, opposite Bangla Academy, late on May 13.

"The university family is deeply shocked by this incident," read the press release.

Immediately after the incident, the university's Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Arts Faculty dean Professor Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan and Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and expressed condolences to the bereaved family of Shammo.

The university authorities also contacted higher authorities and strongly urged them to swiftly arrest the perpetrators and ensure exemplary punishment. Within four hours of the incident, three suspects were apprehended, and a drive is underway to arrest the remaining culprits, said the press release, adding the university administration is working to ensure a fair trial in this incident.

Shahriar was the Literature and Publications Secretary of the Sir A.F. Rahman Hall unit Chhatra Dal of Dhaka University.
