DHAKA, May 14, 2025 (BSS) - Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has said that initiatives have been taken to resolve the housing crisis of sanitation workers following the July Uprising.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, he wrote, "The local government's goal is to ensure the right to education for the children of the Harijan community and to provide them with medical facilities."

The adviser further said, "Although a six-storey residential building was allocated for the sanitation workers of the city's Ganaktuli Sweeper Colony, they could not move in due to previous political realities."

The Dhaka South City Corporation, in coordination with the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, took swift action to free the residence from encroachment and hand it over to the Harijan community.

In another Facebook post, the adviser expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Dhaka University (DU) student Shahriar Alam Shammo, who was stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan late on May 13.

"So far, three suspects have been arrested. The killers must be brought to justice," he added.

"I have already spoken to the Dhaka University (DU) administration, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and other relevant authorities. As per the advice of the university administration, the Udyan will be turned into a safe place very soon," he said.

"I will take responsibility and ensure that Suhrawardy Udyan becomes a safe space. I seek the cooperation of university students and the administration in this regard," Asif Mahmud added.
