Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members detained the 16 people as they were pushed in through the northeastern frontier.

“We have detained them . . . interrogating to confirm their national identity,” BGB-19 Commander Lieutenant Colonel M Jubair Anwar told reporters.

Kanaighat Police Station’s officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Alam later said eight of the 16 people were males, six were females and the rest two were infants.

The OC said the BGB informed police about their detention but they still remained BGB custody.
