DHAKA, 24 June 2025 (BSS) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali today stressed the need for raising awareness among the people to ensure road safety.

“Awareness and vigilance are the most important things for road safety. Through Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project (DRSP), we are trying to make school and college students aware. If the students are aware, they will be able to make others aware,” he said.

Speaking as the chief guest at the award distribution ceremony of the DRSP’s ‘Road Safety Poster and Slogan Contest-2025’, the DMP chief said that road accidents have become a big problem across the country, including Dhaka.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organized the prize distribution ceremony on ‘Road Safety Poster and Slogan Contest-2025’ at the conference room of DMP Headquarters.

“And the main reason for road accidents is the lack of awareness of the general public, including drivers, about traffic laws and rules,” he said.

Responding to question about mob violence, he said, "No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. Strict legal action will be taken against those involved in mob justice."

The Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office, Tomohide Ichiguchi, was present as the special guest while Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar delivered the address of welcome.

A total of 180 students from 16 schools and five universities in the capital participated in this competition. Among the participants, 10 each were awarded with prizes and certificates for best slogans and posters.

The objective of the Road Safety Poster and Slogan Contest is to increase awareness among school and university students following the Japanese tradition and to make them responsible road users and safety ambassadors.

Nasrin Sultana, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner of DMP's Media and Public Relations Department moderated the programme.

Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar, Project Formulation Adviser of DRSP Shoko Sakuma along with JICA representatives and guardians of students participated in the competition while police officers of various ranks, were also present.

The DMP has been implementing the DRSP with the JICA since March 2022.

DRSP is a three-year technical cooperation project aimed at strengthening the capacity of DMP to implement comprehensive traffic safety measures in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area.  DRSP consists of three outputs, and one of the outputs focuses on road safety education/public relations through various methods.
