Ex-attorney general Salauddin Ahmed passes away

DHAKA, Sept 21, 2025 (BSS) - Former Attorney General and Senior Advocate Md Salauddin Ahmed died of old-age complications at a hospital in the city today. 

He was 77.

"My father breathed his last around 1:20am last night while undergoing treatment in the ICU of the Square Hospital in the city," Salauddin's younger son Abrar Ahmad told BSS.

Abrar said his father was suffering from different ailments for a long time. 

Salauddin left behind his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death. 

The first namaz-e-janaza of Salauddin was held after Zohr prayers on the Supreme Court premises, Abrar said, adding, his father will be laid to his eternal rest at Azimpur Graveyard following his second namaz-e-janaza at Taqwa Masjid in the city's Dhanmondi area after Isha prayers today. 
Salauddin served as the 14th Attorney General of Bangladesh from July 13, 2008 to January 12, 2009.

Earlier, he served as the Additional Attorney General from February 13, 2007 until his appointment as the Attorney General. Salauddin, however, resigned from the post of Attorney General on January 12, 2009 after the Awami League government assumed the state power. 

The High Court and Appellate Division have been closed today as a mark of respect for the death of Salahuddin Ahmad, acting Supreme Court Bar Association Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Milon said.

Salahuddin Ahmad was born on February 8, 1948, into a respected Muslim family in Narsingdi district. He completed his BSc in Economics from the London School of Economics in 1969. He then obtained his MA from the University of London in 1970. 

Salahuddin obtained his LLB degree from Dhaka University in 1978 and his LLM degree from Columbia Law School in the United States in 1984.

After completing his education, Salahuddin Ahmad enrolled as a lawyer and started his legal career at the Dhaka District Bar.

 He was enrolled as a lawyer in the High Court Division on June 18, 1982. Salahuddin was enrolled as a lawyer in the Appellate Division in 2002. 

Salahuddin Ahmad, however, served as a faculty of the Economics Department of Dhaka University in the 1970s.
