DHAKA, Sept 25, 2025 (BSS) - A day-long international conference titled 
'Molecular Insights, Therapeutics Advances & Policy Innovation in Cancer 
Care' was held today at Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium of Dhaka 
University (DU).

University's Genetic Engineering Department and Biotechnology department and 
the Cancer Care and Research Trust Bangladesh jointly organized the event.

Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Professor Dr Sayedur Rahman attended 
the inaugural session as the chief guest. 

DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed joined the event 
as special guest.

DU Biological Sciences Faculty Dean Professor Dr Md Enamul Haque, Bangladesh 
Cancer Society Hospital Director Professor Dr M A Hai, National Institute of 
Cancer Research and Hospital Director Professor Dr Md Jahangir Kabir, and 
UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh Susan Vize attended the event.

Eminent geneticist and Oxford University Emeritus Professor Sir Walter Bodmer 
presented the keynote addressing.

Speaking on the occasion, DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr 
Mamun Ahmed said cancer is not merely a disease but a long journey that 
deeply affects patients, families and society.

He said, "The conventional 'one size fits all' approach in cancer therapy is 
being replaced by precision medicine, which designs patient-specific 
treatment based on the biological characteristics of the tumor."

Professor Mamun further noted that recent advances in molecular biology, 
genetics, biotechnology and bioinformatics have opened up new horizons in 
cancer diagnosis and treatment. 

Professor Mamun also urged for balancing technological advancement with 
affordability.

Highlighting research findings, he said, 30-50 percent of cancers are 
preventable through healthy lifestyles, regular check-ups, vaccination, 
abstaining from tobacco and alcohol, and maintaining physical activity.
