DHAKA, Nov 7, 2025 (BSS) - Police have submitted a charge-sheet against seven accused in a case filed over the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a final-year student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at the University of Dhaka, who was stabbed to death in the city's Suhrawardy Udyan while he along with his friends tried to stop a group of drug peddlers to sell drugs there.
Shammo, also the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), was brutally stabbed on May 13, 2025. His friends took him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
His elder brother Shariful Islam filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on May 14.
Investigation Officer (IO) of the Detective Branch (DB)of Police Inspector Akhter Morshed submitted the charge-sheet on November 6 against drug dealers Mehedi Hasan, Md Rabbi alias Kobutor Rabbi, Md Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md Hridoy Islam, Md Harunur Rashid Sohagh, and Md Robin.
Police also pleaded to drop the names of Sujon Sarkar, Tamim Hawlader, Samrat Mollik, and Palash Sardar from the list of accused, as the allegations against them could not be substantiated during the investigation.
According to the charge-sheet, Mehedi Hasan was the ringleader who used to sell ganja at the park with his associates. When the victim and his friends asked them to stop selling drugs in the area, the gang became agitated and plotted his murder.
"All the gang members used to collect ganja from Mehedi and sell it around the Temple Gate area of Suhrawardy Udyan. Mehedi also supplied them with knives and tasers to use against rivals. On the day of the murder, the victim and his friends saw Kobutor Rabbi carrying a taser while passing through the Mukto Mancho area. As the student tried to stop him, Rabbi fled, and the victim chased him on his motorbike," according to the charge-sheet.
"The victim managed to catch Rabbi near the Gol Pukur area and slapped him a couple of times. Rabbi then called his cohorts, and a scuffle broke out between the two groups. During the fight, Mehedi first stabbed a bystander, who tried to intervene, and then punched Shammo on his chest and later stabbed him on his right thigh, leaving him critically injured," it added.
As locals rushed to the spot, Mehedi and his associates fled the scene, police added.
