
JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Dec 16, 2025 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University (JU) today observed the Victory Day with due respect and solemnity through a series of programmes, commemorating the historic victory of Bangladesh in the War of Liberation in 1971.
The observance began at 6:33 am with the hoisting of the national flag by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman and the university flag by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Sohel Ahmed at the new administrative building. Acting Registrar ABM Azizur Rahman, teachers and officials were present on the occasion.
At 8:00 am, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Martyrs' Memorial.
He was accompanied by Pro-Vice Chancellors Prof Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman and Prof Dr Sohel Ahmed, Treasurer Prof Dr M Abdur Rab, deans of different faculties, acting registrar, proctor, provosts of residential halls, teachers, students, officers and employees.
After the Vice-Chancellor's tribute, wreaths were also placed by the JU Teachers' Association, Ladies' Club, leaders of the JU Central Students' Union (JUCSU) led by its VP Abdur Rashid Zitu and GS Md Mazharul Islam, hall provosts, student organisations and professional bodies.
In a message marking the day, the JU VC said Victory Day is a proud moment that symbolises the nation's freedom, independence and identity. He called upon all to pledge to protect national sovereignty, remain united and build a discrimination-free, just Bangladesh, adding that prioritising the country and the welfare of the masses should be the commitment of Victory Day.
As part of the celebrations, JUCSU organised a victory rally and a Liberation War-based drawing and art exhibition competition at 10:00 am.
At 10:30 am, the Vice-Chancellor Cup Women's Handball Tournament was held at the central playground, where Begum Sufia Kamal Hall clinched the title by defeating Nawab Faizunnesa Hall by 5-3 in the final.
The Vice-Chancellor distributed prizes among the winners in the presence of Pro-Vice Chancellors, Treasurer, Teachers' Association President, deans, Provost Committee President, proctor, hall provosts, JUCSU VP and GS, Acting Director of the Physical Education Office and other teachers and students.
Cultural programmes were held in the evening at Selim Al Deen Mukta Mancha, organised by the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) in collaboration with the Students' Welfare and Counselling Centre.
Besides, various student organisations arranged programmes marking the day, while improved meals were served at the residential halls on the occasion.
