JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Feb 17, 2026 (BSS) - Teachers, students and officials of Jahangirnagar University (JU) today rendered the national anthem in chorus marking the establishment of a democratic government after a long period of authoritarian rule.

The programme was held at around 10:30 am at the Shaheed Minar premises on the campus under the supervision of Director of the Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture Professor Dr Shamima Sultana, with the participation of teachers, officials and students.

Speaking on the occasion, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said, "Jahangirnagar University had always played a leading role whenever democracy in Bangladesh faced crisis."

He paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and those killed and injured in the 2024 movement, saying their sacrifices created the opportunity for a democratic transition.

He said, "The chorus rendition of the national anthem symbolised renewal of commitment to protect democratic values, uphold equality and utilise the opportunity created by the new generation to build a just and humane Bangladesh."

"The programme is arranged to unite people of all opinions and beliefs so that everyone can become stakeholders of the state in the new democratic journey," said Prof Shamima Sultana, expressing optimism for building a safe and discrimination-free Bangladesh.

JU Central Students' Union (JUCSU) Vice-President Abdur Rashid Jitu said the university family joined the anthem to welcome the democratic beginning, adding that the national anthem had inspired people during the 2024 mass uprising and would guide efforts to build a better Bangladesh.
