DHAKA, Feb 18, 2026 (BSS) - Former Bangladesh national football team captain Aminul Haque has been appointed State Minister for Youth and Sports in the newly-formed government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

He received the portfolio as a technocrat.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of Bangladesh football, Aminul stepped down from international duty in 2011 after serving as long-time captain of the national team, which he had represented since 1998.

He retired from professional football following the 2013-14 session, bringing to an end a 17-year playing career that included major injuries and five surgeries.

A commanding presence between the posts, Aminul was an inspirational figure during a transformative period for Bangladesh football.

After hanging up his boots, Aminul entered politics in 2014, marking the beginning of a new chapter that has now led him to a ministerial role.
