Swedish Embassy Representative meets DU VC

DHAKA, May 6, 2026 (BSS) - First Secretary of the Embassy of Sweden in Bangladesh Nayoka Martinez Backström met with Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam today at the latter’s of the university.  

During the meeting, both sides emphasized on creating awareness on environment and climate change, enhancing youth engagement, and strengthening public participation in policy-making processes. 

They also discussed about ongoing initiatives and explored avenues for future collaboration in these areas.

It was noted that several public consultations have already been organized with the support of the European Union, Sweden, and Germany, ensuring active participation of young people. These initiatives aim to present different environmental and climate-related issues in a simplified manner to the general public and to enhance public awareness.

The discussion also highlighted plans for an upcoming program, targeting the participation of around 250 students and civil society representatives. It is expected that, alongside international partners, the University of Dhaka will play an active role in the event.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam assured the guest of providing all possible support in such initiatives. Youth engagement is crucial in addressing environmental and climate challenges, and the university is committed to playing a responsible role in this regard, he pointed out.
