First plane with hantavirus ship evacuees leaves Canary Islands

GRANADILLA DE ABONA, Spain, May 10, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The first flight carrying evacuees from a cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak that has triggered international concern left Spain's Canary Islands on Sunday, an AFP journalist saw.

The first passengers and crew removed from the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius on the island of Tenerife are 14 Spaniards who will observe quarantine at a military hospital in Madrid.
