DHAKA, June 30, 2026 (BSS) – Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said the country currently has around 860,000 metric tonnes of food grains above the required safe stock level.

“The country presently has 2,210,000 metric tonnes of food grains in stock, while the prescribed safe stock level is 1,350,000 metric tonnes. To control market prices, rice and flour are being sold daily through the OMS,” he said.

The government will also arrange for TCB products to be delivered to households so that people do not have to stand in queues, he added.

Speaking at the weekly press briefing at the Press Information Department (PID) in the Secretariat, Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said the ample reserves play a significant role in ensuring national food security and will strengthen the government’s capacity to deal with any potential food crisis.

Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmad and Additional Secretary of the Information Ministry Riyasat Al Wasif were present at the briefing.

Dr Zahed outlined the activities of various government ministries.

Regarding the Prime Minister’s visit to China and the Teesta project, he said ties between the two countries have been further strengthened during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit. Eight memorandums of understanding and three agreements were signed covering trade, agriculture and media cooperation.

“China has assured all types of support for the implementation of the Teesta project,” he added.

He also said 342 Bangladeshis detained at a Libyan detention centre have been repatriated.

The adviser said a project has been launched to install modern “farmer shelters” and lightning protection rods in the 15 most lightning-prone districts to reduce deaths caused by lightning strikes.

He noted that the initiative was taken quickly to protect farmers instead of relying on the previous government’s slow-moving palm tree project.

He added that in the past week, the BGB successfully foiled attempts by the Indian BSF to push in 115 people through various borders, including Kushtia, Satkhira and Jhenaidah, and prevented the attempted infiltration of 15 people along the Myanmar border.

Dr Zahed said a policy decision has been made to use a single BRTA RFID tag and one integrated mobile app at all toll plazas nationwide to reduce congestion and save time.

Separately, the Railway Ministry plans to plant 2.4 million trees over the next five years, of which 160,000 will be planted this year.

He said the nationwide Vitamin A Plus campaign has administered capsules to about 24 million children.

Meanwhile, he said all 724 pilgrims who had temporarily gone missing in Saudi Arabia this year have been located; currently, no pilgrim is missing.
