DHAKA, June 2, 2026 (BSS) – Speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, MP, has congratulated Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on being elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Dr. Khalilur Rahman was elected at a vote held at the UN headquarters in New York today, defeating a candidate from Cyprus.

The Speaker extended his congratulations to the foreign minister, describing the election as a proud achievement for Bangladesh on the global stage, said a press release.

Notably, former foreign minister Humayun Rashid Choudhury had previously served as President of the 41st session of the UN General Assembly after being elected in 1986. With the latest election, Dr. Khalilur Rahman becomes the second Bangladeshi to assume the prestigious position.

According to a press release issued by the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, the Speaker conveyed his greetings following the election.
