Five people remanded over abduction of Patuakhali UP chairman

DHAKA, Jan 03, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today placed five people on different terms of remand in a case lodged over abduction of Qazi Raisul Islam alias Selim, 45, chairman of Moukaran upazilla parishad (UP) of Patuakhali.

The five remanded accused are- Mohammad Farhad, 34, Toufik Rahat, 20, Ripon Mahmud Nayan, 27, Mohammad Didar, 25, and Amir Hossain, 65. Of the five, the first four were placed on three-day remand each, while the last one was placed on one-day remand.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Zunaid passed the order as police produced the five accused before the court and pleaded to place them on a seven-day remand each.

Separate teams of detective branch (DB) of police on January 2 rescued Qazi Raisul Islam from a house beside Doleswar Government Prime School under South Keraniganj Police Station and arrested the five members of the abductor gang. 

Later a case was filed with the South Keraniganj Police station.

According to the police sources, Qazi Raisul Islam Selim was abducted from in front of Ekuria BRTA office in the early hours of January 1 as he was coming to Dhaka from Patuakhali. The abductors later phoned his wife and demanded Taka one crore in ransom.
