DHAKA, April 9, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sent to jail former lawmaker
from Noakhali-2 constituency and Bengal Group Chairman Morshed Alam, showing
him arrested in a case lodged over the murder of a schoolboy Shamim in the
city's Dhanmandi area during the July-August mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza passed the order as police produced
the accused before the court and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the
end of the probe.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka
Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a drive last night in the capital's
Gulshan area and detained Morshed Alam.

According to the case documents, Shamim, 13, joined an anti-discrimination
student rally in the afternoon of August 5, 2024, in the city's Dhanmandi
area. Cadres of Awami League (AL) and its front organisations attacked the
rally, hacking and beating the protesters indiscriminately. Shamim got
seriously injured in the attack and was rushed to the hospital.

He died of his injuries on August 6 last year. Shamim's mother Jahanara Begum
filed the case on October 3, 2024 against 128 people including ousted prime
minister Sheikh Hasina.
