328 arrested, 3.96 crore meters fishing nets seized in mother Hilsha protection drive in 5-day

DHAKA, Oct 9, 2025 (BSS) - The River Police has arrested 328 people and seized a huge quantity of unauthorized fishing nets in the past five days as part of the operation to protect mother Hilsha.

The operation is being conducted across the country as part of the "Maa Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2025", said a press release of the force.

The River Police has been conducting special campaigns along with regular operations throughout the year to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure the safety of waterways.

The 22-day Ma Hilsa Conservation Campaign is continuing from last October 4 to October 25, 2025. 

Marking the campaign, under the guidance of Additional IGP of River Police, Kusum Dewan, over 3.96 crore 34,050 meters of illegal nets, 3,927 kg of fish and 140 boats were seized in the past five days.

During the period, 328 people were arrested in 85 mobile court operations and 84 four cases were registered.

The seized illegal nets were destroyed and the fishes were distributed to local orphanages.

It is to be noted that during the Ma Hilsa Conservation Campaign announced by the government, all types of fishing, including Hilsa, transportation, storage, purchase and sale, processing, marketing and exchange will be prohibited. 

This campaign will continue until October 25 of this month.
