UGC need to step up monitoring to boost research quality

DHAKA, April 10, 2025 (BSS) – A group of scholars and educationalists has recommended the University Grant Commission (UGC) to step up and intensify supervision on research works to enhance research quality.

The scholars put forward the proposal while speaking in an academic seminar arranged by UGC’s Research Grants and Award Division held at the UGC here today with its director Dr. Duraga Rani in the chair.
 
The seminar was joined by teachers from various public universities.

The scholars also instructed limiting the numbers and pages of researches, fixing the aims and objective of research works, dropping unnecessary topics from the research works, and preparing separate papers for science and technology, Arts and business fields.

Speaking as the chief guest, UGC member Prof Masuma Habib said the teachers of government colleges are producing excellent research works nowadays and contributing to knowledge creation just like university teachers.

 “It is necessary to make a database of the teachers who are conducting these research works. And based on their excellence, they could be posted in the renowned government colleges of the country,” she said adding that they will submit an outline to the directorate of Secondary and Higher Education in this regard.

Addressing as the special guest, UGC secretary Dr. Fakhrul Islam said it is necessary to initiate research works from the college level to develop country’s research quality. Research, creativeness, critical thinking quality, and communication skills are must to build a New Bangladesh.

He added that UGC has already taken initiatives to preserve research quality by making a database.
