2.90 lakh meters fishing nets seized, 342 held in 7 days

DHAKA, July 17, 2025 (BSS) - The River Police seized 2,89,71,200 meters of illegal fishing nets and arrested 342 individuals in the past seven days in the nationwide ongoing operation to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways.

During the operation, 2,523 kg of fish, 14,000pieces of Renu pona (fish fries) and 80 kg of jellied shrimp were also seized, while 304 bushes were destroyed from the river, said a press release of the River Police.

The River Police also arrested 342 individuals in the past seven days. Ninety cases including 56 cases of fishing, one theft, 22 cases of reckless driving, seven cases of accidental death, two cases of sand extraction, one case of murder and one case under the Special Powers Act were filed against the arrestees. 

 Fourteen bodies were recovered during the period.

The River Police filed multiple cases against 135 bulkheads and five dredgers were seized due to having no valid documents.

The seized illegal nets have been destroyed. The fish have been distributed to orphanage and the fish fry have been released into the water.
