'One martyr, one tree' programme commemorating July Mass-uprising observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, July 19, 2025 (BSS) - The 'One Martyr, One Tree' programme was observed in Rajshahi city today commemorating the martyrs and injured fighters of the July Mass Uprising in 2024.

The tree plantation event was jointly organized by the District Administration and the Department of Social Forestry (DSF) in front of the July Martyr Memorial Plaque at C&B crossing in the city.

On the occasion, four saplings of the Joytun species were planted as a symbol of longevity, holiness and peace in memory of four martyrs from Rajshahi - Saquib Anjum, Minarul Islam, Raihan Ali and Firoj Ahmed.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Rajshahi Range, Muhammad Shahjahan attended the programme as chief guest.

Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Muhammad Abu Sufian, Director of Local Government Parvej Raihan, Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Habibur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter, Superintendent of Police Farzana Islam and Divisional Forest Officer Rafiquzzaman Shah were also present.

A large number of students and teachers from 20 educational institutions in the city participated in the programme. Tree saplings were also distributed among the students for plantation at their respective institutions and homes.

Speaking on the occasion, DIG Muhammad Shahjahan said the tree plantation is not only symbolic but also a reflection of the nation's responsibility. "These trees will uphold both our history and our environment," he added.

He urged all to come forward with more tree plantation efforts to honour the martyrs and protect the environmental balance.
