DINAJPUR, July 19, 2025(BSS) - The Haji Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) has enlisted 102 leaders and activists of banned Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) for their alleged involvement in last year's attacks on the July warriors.
Prof Md Abu Hassan, registrar of the university, told BSS today that the authorities have agreed to punish these BCL leaders and activists on the basis of the recommendations of the facts finding committee of the university.
The committee investigated the series of attacks on the July warriors on the university campus and its adjoining areas from July 15 to August 5, the registrar said.
The prominent leaders who have been enlisted for punishment are-the then president of banned BCL university unit Alamgir Hossain, its general secretary M M Masud Rana Muthu, vice presidents-Chandan Barmon, Shuvo Neogi, Rafsan Jani and Shah Poran and BCL leaders-Morshedul Alam Rony, Dhanonjoy Bhowmik Joy, Kawser, Sajal, Shuvo, Uttam Kumar Paul, Atiqur Rahman, Mehedi Hassan, Lira Akhter, Moniruzzaman, Al Amin, S Tafsirul-e-Abbasi, Anisuzzaman and Bakhtiar Fahim.
The committee in its reports alleged that the leaders and activists of banned BCL launched deadly attacks on the activists of anti-discrimination students on the campus from July 15 to August 5 last year in which many innocent students were injured. They also assembled huge illegal arms at the university dormitories to launch attacks on the activists of anti-discrimination students' movement those were recovered from the halls after August 5, the reports added.
The committee recommended punishing the BCL leaders and activists in two categories. There are 85 students in one category and 17 in the other category.
The committee, during its investigation, took statements of the accused students, and considering the gravity of their offences, suggested punishments like cancellation of certificates, withholding the certificates, expelling for life-term, expelling for two or three years and filing of criminal cases.
The probe reports were placed in the 59th meeting of the university board and the board gave approval to give punishment to 102 students who were linked with the banned BCL, after completing necessary formalities.
When contacted, Member Secretary of the disciplinary committee and Proctor of the university Prof Md Shamsuddoha told BSS that the university administration has suggested such exemplary punishment to the offenders so that no one dares to commit such crimes in future. The punishment would be implemented soon, he said.
University Registrar Prof Md Abu Hassan said that the university authority will serve show cause notices to the accused students, seeking their statements regarding the allegations. The university will scrutinize the reply of the students and will take final the decision to give punishment as per their offences, he added.
