CHATTOGRAM, July 19, 2025 (BSS) – BNP Standing Committee Member and former Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said that politicisation had hampered the country’s education system.
During the last 15-16 years country’s education system has been limited to an individual, a family, a party and their ideology, which is terrible, he said while addressing the triennial conference of Bangladesh Teachers' Association, Chattogram (North) at the city’s Ladies Club as the chief guest.
“Education never works for any party...It will be the main tool for nation building... To formulate an education policy, these relationships must be clarified first because teachers create future citizens,” he said.
He said, “We must first understand the context of education in Bangladesh. The biggest problem is that we have not yet grasped the four-way relationship among teachers, state, society and students”.
With Convener and Divisional Organizing Secretary of Chattogrram North District Teachers' Association Touhidul Islam Tipu in the chair, Chairman of the Teachers' Union, Principal Mohammad Selim Bhuiyan addressed the function as special guest.
Secretary General of the Teachers' Union and Additional Secretary General of the Teachers' Union, Md. Zakir Hossain inaugurated the function.
Amir Khasru said that a teacher is a very important and hounarable person in society and people in the village or city know and respect him.
“For students, teachers are respected after their parents. But that status has been largely destroyed in society today. If we really want to work on education, we must first restore the social status and respect of teachers,” he added.
Terming teachers as financially neglected one in the country, he said that although other employees of the state receive various benefits, it does not apply for the teachers.
“The discrimination that exists between government and private teachers is unreasonable. If both sides teach the same curriculum and for the same purpose, then why there will be such financial disparity?” he said.
Referring to the upcoming election, he commented there is no other way except for elections in February next year. “The ownership of the people of Bangladesh must be returned to people through elections in the first half of February...There is no other way out beyond this,” he added.
He said, "If anyone wants to step back from the election process, they must be given a message that the people of Bangladesh want democracy, the people of Bangladesh want to regain ownership of their country”.
In this connection, he said, “Those of you who do not want democracy, no one has asked them to do politics...Those of you who do not want votes, what is the use of forming a political party? Don't hold elections, and say again that I am a political party, if you are a political party, you must go to the people."
