Japan hands over cyclone shelters in Barishal to boost disaster preparedness

DHAKA, Sept 22, 2025 (BSS) – Japan government has handed over newly constructed cyclone shelters in Barishal under its Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects, aimed at strengthening disaster prevention and resilience in the district.

First Secretary in Japan embassy in Dhaka Karasawa Shinju, attended the handover ceremony on Sunday and praised the initiative carried out by Japanese NGO Good Neighbors Japan with support from the Japanese government, said a press release here today. 

The project included the construction of cyclone shelters for local residents while also enhancing disaster preparedness capacities in vulnerable areas of Barisal.

“I hope this project will contribute to improving disaster prevention capabilities in Barishal and help people minimize their sufferings during disasters,” Karasawa said at the ceremony.

Japan has been a longstanding partner of Bangladesh in disaster management, infrastructure development, and humanitarian assistance, with multiple projects over the years dedicated to enhancing resilience in disaster-prone regions.
