DINAJPUR, Sept 23, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain today said that the formation of a democratic government through free and fair elections is the only way to overcome the prevailing crisis in the country.

"There is a national consensus among people of all walks of life in favour of this demand," he said while addressing a views-exchange meeting with journalists after visiting various Durga Puja mandaps and distributing financial assistance in Hili under Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur district.

He said the practice of proportional representation (PR) has not taken place in the country over the past 54 years and the BNP has made its stance clear on this issue.

"The BNP, the largest democratic political party in the country, demands voting rights in line with the Constitution. For more than a century and a half, the people of Bengal have been deprived of their right to vote in national elections. They are eagerly waiting to cast their votes," he said.

Dr. Zahid distributed personal donations of Taka 5,000 each to several Durga Puja mandaps in four upazilas of Dinajpur-6 constituency throughout the day.

Hakimpur Upazila BNP unit President Md Ferdous Rahman, General Secretary Sakhawat Hossain Shilpi, Municipal BNP Acting President Farid Khan, General Secretary Nazmul Hossain and BNP party leaders and activists from different tiers were present on the occasion.
