DHAKA, Sept 25, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed today said election held under the PR (Proportional Representation) system could lead to the formation of another fascist or weak government, similar to the one led by Sheikh Hasina. 

He said, "If elections are held under the PR system, another fascist or weak government like Sheikh Hasina's may be formed. Such a situation would make the country permanently unstable."

Salahuddin Ahmed made the remarks as the chief guest at a seminar organized at the Supreme Court Auditorium by Bangladesh Nationalist British Law Student Alliance (BNBLSA) marking its 15th founding anniversary.
 
BNBLSA Convener Wasi Parvez Tasin presided over the event while International Affairs Secretary of BNP Barrister Nasir Uddin Ahmed Ashim spoke as the chief speaker, and Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Ragib Rauf Chowdhury spoke as the special guests.

Salahuddin said, "One objective of demanding PR is to gain more seats and the other is to create disunity and instability in the country so that the 'majority party' cannot come to power."

"The method for voting is clearly said in the constitution. The constitution mandates the election of public representatives through direct votes. Jamaat should open the constitution to find this out," he added. 

Urging not to confuse the nation, he said, "It is better not to confuse the nation with misleading statements. If PR is implemented, party autocracy and individual autocracy will be established. The public sentiment, not ours, is- 'We voted in Sandwip and we got an MP in the Maldives' - that is what PR would be like."

The BNP leader questioned, "Some people said that the current government has no authority to hold an election, and some are asking under which law the election will be held - my question to them is: 'Does a political party then have the authority to hold an election?"

He said, "The country cannot be put in danger by accepting anyone's unconstitutional, apolitical, illegal or unlawful demands."

Salahuddin Ahmed called upon the interim government to establish the rule of law in the country to protect the constitutional framework.
