CHATTOGRAM, Sept 25, 2025 (BSS) – World Maritime Day 2025 was observed in Chattogram with colorful events focusing on the theme “Our Sea, Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity.”

Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association (BMMOA) marked the occasion with a vibrant procession today.

A colorful procession to mark the day started from the Barik Building intersection in the city and circled the main roads. After the procession, BMMOA General Secretary, Marine Engineer Md. Sakhawat Hossain, said, “Our mariners are working tirelessly day and night to keep the wheels of the country’s economy moving. The maritime sector is the backbone of international trade, transporting more than 80 percent of the world’s goods. Our country’s mariners are one of the driving forces of that trade.”

He mentioned that currently, the maritime trade sector of Bangladesh earns about 1.75 billion dollars in foreign exchange annually through shipping, shipbuilding, ship recycling yards, and the employment of seafarers on international ships.

Chattogram Marine Academy celebrated World Maritime Day with various programs. The day is observed annually by the World Maritime Organization and its member states to highlight the importance of the maritime sector. The event at the academy concluded with marine cadets presenting a guard of honor to the guest captains.

The first World Maritime Day was celebrated in 1978 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention. Since then, it has been observed every year on the last Thursday of September.
Mariners, representatives of shipping companies, and individuals from the maritime industry participate in the procession.
