2.75 crore meter illegal fishing nets seized

DHAKA, Sept 25, 2025 (BSS) – As part of the   nationwide ongoing operation, the River Police seized over 2.75 crore meters of illegal fishing nets in the past seven days.  

They also arrested 266 individuals as part of the move to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways, said a press release of the force. 
 
Apart from the fishing nets, 2133 kg of fish, and 320 kg of jellied shrimp were seized during the operations.  
 
In the past seven days of operations, a total of 266 accused in 62 cases were also arrested. Of the cases, 34 were lodged under the Fisheries Act, 12 for reckless driving, seven for unauthorized extraction of sands, four for unnatural deaths, one for stealing, one for drug trafficking and one murder. 
 
In the weeklong operations, cases were filed against 97 bulkheads and six dredgers were seized due to having no legal documents.
The seized illegal nets have been destroyed while fishes have been distributed to orphanages and fish fries have been released into the water.
