Awami-backed lawyer jailed over anti-state slogans

DHAKA, Sept 26, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Dhaka has ordered the arrest of Rofiqul Alam Chowdhury (61), an Awami-backed lawyer, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act following allegations that he chanted anti-state slogans in the Gulistan area of the capital.

Rofiqul Alam Chowdhury is identified as a member of the Dhaka branch of the Bangladesh Awami Lawyers Association.

He is also noted as a former activist of the Jubo League, affiliated with the Muradnagar Thana in Cumilla.

Police today presented Chowdhury in the court, seeking to send him to jail until the investigation into the case is completed.

Following the hearing, Magistrate Atiqur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court ordered to send him to jail.

Chowdhury was arrested by police on Thursday.
