Over 131,219 prisoners receive legal aid

DHAKA, Sept 27, 2025 (BSS) - The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has provided government-funded legal assistance to 131,219 prisoners across the country from 2009 to August 2025.

The information was revealed in a report published on the website of NLASO, detailing legal support provided during the period. The report stated that, till August 2025, 131,219 prisoners received legal aid at government expense.

According to the report, a total of 12,82,997 people have so far benefited under this service, which is dedicated to providing legal support to the underprivileged and justice-seeking citizens.

Initially launched at the district level, the programme now covers all 64 districts of the country through district legal aid offices, the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, labour legal aid cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and the national helpline call centre (toll-free: 16430).

Among the beneficiaries, 29,529 people received support through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, while 10,12,777 through the 64 district legal aid offices, 29,529 through labour legal aid cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and 189,896 through the national helpline call centre.

The report further said that NLASO has been implementing this programme under the Legal Aid Services Act, enacted in 2000, to provide free legal aid to financially insolvent, distressed and justice-seeking citizens. 

The organisation functions under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs as a government-run service body.
