Agriculture should be considered 'runway of develop': Secretary

KHULNA, Sept 27, 2025(BSS) - Agriculture Secretary Dr Mohammad Emdadullah Mian today said the agriculture sector should be considered the "runway of development" to uplift the country.

"We have to go forward with the agriculture sector by giving the highest priority to it," he said while addressing a regional workshop on 'Transforming Bangladesh Agriculture-Outlook-2050' here as the chief guest.

Chaired by the Additional Secretary of the ministry Dr Md Mahmudur Rahman, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Firoz Sarkar joined the seminar as special guest. Agriculture Ministry organized the seminar where National Project Coordinator of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Dr Susmita Banik also spoke.

Joint Secretary of the Ministry Kamrul Hassan delivered the welcome address while Dr Md Mahmudur Rahman presented his key note speech.

The secretary urged all to build up an agriculture friendly economy in the country and said that without agriculture, the country could not be developed.

"We would be able to ensure food security of the country and self-reliant in food by 2050 if we all work together," he said.

This workshop will determine the future agriculture of the country and its work plan formulating a guideline in this regard," Dr Emdad said.

All the 17 departments of the ministry would be brought under a single umbrella, the secretary said, adding that there is no shortage of fertilizer in the country now.

Terming the agriculture as the heart of the country, Dr Emdad said that there is no scope to undermine the sector. 

Officials from the ministry, agriculture department, water development board, BADC, fertilizer dealers, seed dealers, agriculture instrument traders, journalists, teachers and representatives from the government and non-government offices from different districts and upazilas of the division joined the workshop.
