DHAKA, 28 Sept, 2025 (BSS) - A high-level delegation from the European Union’s Election Observation Mission met with Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman this noon at the latter’s party office in the city’s Bashndhara area.
Mette Bakken- Team Leader and Electoral and Political Expert, Manuel Wally- Legal Expert, and Baeiba Zarina- Deputy Head of Delegation of the EU Delegation to Bangladesh were among the EU delegation in the meeting.
From Jamaat side, party’s Secretary General and former MP Prof. Mia Golam Parwar, Central Executive Council Member Mobarak Hossain, Dhaka North Medical Thana Ameer Dr. S.M. Khaliduzzaman, and the Ameer’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Prof. Dr. Mahmudul Hasan were present at the meeting.
Following the meeting, Jamaat Secretary General Prof. Parwar briefed the media, stating that the discussion took place in a cordial environment. The EU delegation informed the Jamaat leadership that their mission’s objective is to consult with political stakeholders in Bangladesh ahead of the national polls.
“EU plans to deploy observers in all 64 districts during the election period, with one representative assigned to each district. A comprehensive report on the election will be released after the observation concludes,” he said.
Referring to Jamaat Ameer, he said the Ameer sought cooperation of EU in observing the election, providing technical support from the EU to arrange the polls to make it free, fair and acceptable to all.
“In a response to the EU query on expatriate voting rights, Dr. Shafiqur noted that the party had submitted a formal letter to the Election Commission to initiate the process of facilitating overseas voting and the government is working on it,” the secretary general quoted the Jamaat Ameer as saying.
In a query of Jammat’s future agenda, the ameer outlined party’s priorities as ensuring ethical education, building a corruption-free society, and establishing social justice.
Dr. Shafikur criticized 15 years of political repression against Jamaat, including arrests and suppression.
