DHAKA, Sept 29, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu today expressed hope that the interim government will establish democracy in the country by holding elections in February.

“The Zia family stands for democracy and struggles to protect the country’s independence and to establish the people’s rights. You are with that family. A parliament must be formed with people’s representatives to run the country. It is only possible through an election, there is no other way to establish democracy. I hope the interim government will establish democracy in the country through elections," he said.

Dudu made the remarks while speaking at a discussion titled ‘There is no alternative to the national parliament election’, organized by the Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club.

BNP Standing Committee member Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was present as the chief guest at the discussion.

Dudu said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman declared independence and also fought in the battlefield for achieving the independence. “Not only did he (Ziaur Rahman) declare independence and fight, but later he took the helm of the country to protect its independence and re-establish democracy, thus forming a modern Bangladesh," he added.

“Subsequently, when autocracy reappeared in the country, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia re-established democracy after nine long years of movement and struggle. In the last 15-16 years, when Sheikh Hasina established authoritarian rule in the country, our leaders Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman had led movements to establish democracy in the country," he said.

Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal president Syed Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat presided over the event while General Secretary of Olama Dal Dhaka Mohanagar South Hafez Qari Rafiqul Islam, and President of Desh Bachao Manush Bachao Andolan K M Rakibul Islam Ripon also spoke.
