Turkey waiting for elections in Bangladesh: Amir Khasru

DHAKA, Oct 6, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said Turkey is waiting for elections in Bangladesh.

He said this in a press briefing following Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Berris Ekinci’s meeting with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party chairperson's Gulshan office here. 

Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Ramis Sen accompanied the Turkish deputy foreign minister in the meeting.  

The meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, discussed various issues including strengthening bilateral relation, trade and commerce, boosting investment and the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Khasru said Turkey wants to see the post-election future in Bangladesh, wants to strengthen relations with that government, and is even interested in working with the new government.

"Long-standing friendship between the two countries, which has been going on since the time of Ziaur Rahman and   Turkey and Saheed Zia’s  important role in the OIC were discussed in the meeting. Discussions were held on strengthening the OIC in the coming days," he said.

He said talks were held to strengthen bilateral relations and increase cooperation in all fields. 

The issue of Turkish investment in Bangladesh in various fields   and further enhancing the cultural ties between Bangladesh and Turkey were discussed, he said.

He recalled Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman who named a street of the capital Dhaka after Kamal Ataturk Avenue.

The BNP leader said Turkey has expressed interest in investing more in Bangladesh. 

Apart from Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, party standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, acting chairman's advisor Humayun Kabir, and organizing secretary Shama Obaid were present at the meeting.

The Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister arrived in Dhaka this morning on a two-day visit. 

Regarding the establishment of a joint defense industry, Salahuddin Ahmed said, "The cooperation that the Turkish government has with Bangladesh in the defense sector will continue. They are in talks with Bangladesh to set up a joint defense industry. They may have a discussion with the government tomorrow. We have told them that our cooperation in that regard will continue."
