DHAKA, Oct 9, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today that the party's foremost objective is to realize the dreams and aspirations of Shaheed Nazir Uddin Ahmed Jihad, who laid down his life for democracy.
Nazir Uddin Jihad, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist from Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj, was shot dead in Dhaka on October 10, 1990, during a protest against the autocratic regime of Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
In a message marking the 35th anniversary of Jihad's martyrdom, observed as Shaheed Jihad Day, Fakhrul said, "Our main objective is to establish democratic values at all levels of the state and society to fulfill the dream for which Shaheed Jihad embraced the bullet of a dictator. Only then will his soul find peace."
Offering prayers for the salvation of the slain student leader, Fakhrul said, "On the occasion of Shaheed Jihad Day, I pay my deepest respect to his memory and pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul. He was a vanguard of the movement to restore democracy."
Describing Jihad as a shining name in the country's democratic struggle, the BNP leader said, "Shaheed Jihad sacrificed his life to restore democracy. His heroic sacrifice played a pivotal role in toppling the autocratic regime, ushering in constitutional continuity and a new democratic era. As a nation, we are proud of his historic contribution to the pro-democracy movement of the 1990s."
