Man sentenced to death for killing wife in Kamrangirchar

DHAKA, Oct 9, 2025 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced one Md Sohel Rana, 23, to death for killing his wife Sonia Akhter by pressing a pillow on her face for dowry in the capital’s Kamrangirchar area in 2016.

Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal -4 pronounced the judgment and fined the convict, who is still at large, TK one lakh. It also acquitted Sheuli Begum and Mazeda Begum of the charges in the case.

According to the case documents, Sohel Rana married Sonia in 2023. He and his family used to torture Sonia for dowry since their marriage.  Her father Md Chan Miah at one stage gave Sohel TK 90,000. But after some days, Sohel and his family again began to torture Sonia for 50,000 TK more.

On July 17, 2016, Sohel Rana and his accomplices strangled Sonia Akter to death by pressing a pillow on her face. Sonia’s father filed the case the next day. The tribunal on July 3, 2018, framed charges against the accused. 

A total of 12 witnesses testified in the case on different hearing dates.
