DHAKA, Oct 11, 2025 (BSS) - Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of eminent fiction writer, essayist, educationist and Emeritus Professor of Dhaka University Syed Manzoorul Islam.

In a condolence message, the Director General said that Syed Manzoorul Islam was not only an educationist, but also a literary figure, a man of free thought, writer, storyteller and essayist.

He said Professor Islam had long taught at the Department of English of Dhaka University, where he later became an Emeritus Professor. 

He wrote: "He (Manzoorul) stepped beyond the line of conventional storytelling and wrote in a distinct style. He conducted significant research on Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and Shamsur Rahman, which has further enriched Bangla literature."

In his message, Rezauddin Ahmed prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family members and admirers.

Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam passed away on Friday at 5:00pm while undergoing treatment at Labaid Hospital in the capital.
