DHAKA, Dec 03, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has called for strengthening Bangladesh's pharmaceutical sector to meet global standards, saying the country's large population should be viewed as a resource rather than a burden.

"Transforming the growing population into skilled human resources is essential for building a hunger- and poverty-free, self-reliant Bangladesh," he told a views-exchange with pharmaceutical businessmen of Dhaka-15 constituency at the Mehfil Convention Hall in the capital's Shewrapara on Tuesday.

Chaired by Bangladesh Chemists and Druggists Samity (BCDS) central leader AAM Abdullah Al Mamun and moderated by BCDS senior vice-president Mahbubur Rahman Masum, it was also addressed by Dhaka North Jamaat assistant secretary Dr. Fakhruddin Manik.

Dr. Shafiqur said Bangladesh is a small country with a dense population, yet people should never be considered a liability.

"Humans are always assets. Our duty is to turn this population into a strong workforce. A healthy population is key to advancing the nation," he said, adding that physical well-being and moral strength are both essential for national progress.

He expressed concern over allegations that a section of doctors compromise ethics by accepting undue benefits from pharmaceutical companies. "Some forget moral principles for material gain and act irresponsibly with people's lives," he said.

Highlighting the progress of Bangladesh's pharmaceutical industry, he noted that the sector was once dependent on foreign companies but has since undergone a "positive transformation." Bangladesh now exports medicines to 38 countries, he added.

The Jamaat chief urged all stakeholders to take effective steps to elevate the domestic pharmaceutical industry to global standards.

Calling on medical professionals and industry representatives to uphold integrity, he said, "Not all doctors are bad, and not all are good. But unethical collaboration between some physicians and companies misleads the public. Ultimately, such actions bring no benefit in this world or the hereafter."

He urged everyone to act with conscience and accountability, saying true success comes from earning the pleasure of the Almighty through honesty and good conduct.

Professional zone assistant director Ziaul Hasan, Kafrul zone assistant director Md. Shahidullah, constituency member secretary Shah Alam Tuhin, and local organizational leaders were also present at the event.
