DHAKA, Dec 27, 2025 (BSS)- National Citizen Party (NCP) senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara today announced that she will contest the upcoming parliamentary election from Dhaka-9 constituency as an independent candidate.
She made the announcement in a Facebook post addressed to the residents of Khilgaon, Sabujbagh and Mugda, saying that despite her long cherished aspiration to enter parliament through a political party platform, the prevailing realities have led her to decide against contesting as a nominee of any political party or alliance.
In the post, Tasnim Jara described herself as a “daughter of the area,” noting that she was born and raised in Khilgaon. She said she had earlier promised the people to fight for them and contribute to building a new political culture in the country.
“Regardless of the situation, I am determined to keep that promise. Therefore, in this election, I will contest from Dhaka-9 as an independent candidate,” she wrote.
Highlighting the challenges of running independently, Jara said party-backed candidates usually enjoy organisational strength, local party offices, organised activists and institutional access to raise concerns related to security and administration.
“As I am not contesting under any party banner, I will not have these advantages,” she said.
She said her only reliance is on the people of the constituency, expressing hope that voters would stand by her considering her honesty, dedication and determination to practise a new kind of politics.
Referring to legal requirements, Tasnim Jara said that under election laws, an independent candidate must submit signatures of support from at least 4,693 registered voters of the Dhaka-9 constituency on prescribed forms.
She said the process of collecting these signatures would begin tomorrow, adding that completing the task in a single day would be nearly impossible without spontaneous public support.
She also called upon supporters to extend their support as volunteers or by providing space for signature collection to come forward.
In the Facebook post, Tasnim Jara further addressed the issue of election fundraising, saying some supporters had earlier donated funds.
She said those who wish to receive refunds following her latest decision would be able to do so after verification of transaction details.
