DHAKA, Jan 1, 2026 (BSS) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman today said his party had worked with the BNP in the past in the interest of the country and would continue to do so again for the sake of national interest.

“Out of love for the country, we worked with the BNP in the past, and InshaAllah we will continue to work together in the national interest,” he told journalists, adding that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and other BNP leaders had also expressed the same aspiration.

The Jamaat Ameer made the remarks this evening after visiting the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office to convey condolences to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his bereaved family members following the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

During the visit, Dr Shafiqur Rahman met Tarique Rahman and members of the family, expressed sympathy and solidarity, and later signed the condolence book kept at the BNP office.

Referring to the upcoming national election, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat-e-Islami was committed to holding discussions with all political parties to ensure a free, fair, participatory and acceptable election in the interest of the country.

“We have expressed our commitment to discuss election-related issues with all political parties so that a fair and participatory election can be ensured,” he said.

Jamaat Ameer said that Begum Khaleda Zia had created a foundation of political unity, adding that Jamaat wanted to move forward by standing on that very platform. “We want to follow the path of unity that Begum Khaleda Zia left behind and work together to restore a healthy political environment in the country,” he said.

He further said political parties had also discussed the need to sit together after the election and even before the formation of the next government to hold open and constructive dialogue in the greater interest of the nation.

“For the sake of national stability over the next five years and to bring back a positive political atmosphere, we need to think collectively and work together,” he added.

Paying tribute to Khaleda Zia, Dr Shafiqur Rahman described her farewell as a rare moment in the country’s history. “Being bid farewell with people’s tears is a great honour. It does not come to everyone,” he said, noting that the former prime minister received the respect she deserved for her contributions to the nation.

He expressed gratitude to the doctors and medical professionals who were involved in Khaleda Zia’s treatment, saying their sincere and professional service had set an example for the country’s medical community.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman prayed for the eternal peace of Khaleda Zia’s soul and expressed deep condolences to her family members, relatives, party leaders, colleagues and the people of Bangladesh.
