Govt able to organize free, fair, participatory polls: Shafiqul Alam

DHAKA, Jan 1, 2026 (BSS) – Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today expressed hope that the interim government would be able to hold one of the best credible elections in the country’s history in a free, fair and participatory manner with record voter turnout.

“We hope the interim government will be able to organize a good election. It will be one of the best elections in Bangladesh’s history in terms of free, fair, participatory and credible one,” he said while responding to a question from a journalist while briefing at the Foreign Service Academy here.

Since the process involves not only the parliamentary election but also a referendum, the press secretary believed that there will be “a record voter turnout”.

Regarding security, he noted that the issue is being given the highest attention.

“Regular meetings are being held. We are giving highest attention to the matter,” Shafiqul Alam said, adding, there was a positive development that the submission of nomination papers was completed smoothly without report of any disorder or violence.

On average, he said, there are more than eight contesting candidates per constituency.

Replying to another question on people's awareness about the referendum, the press secretary highlighted the government awareness campaigns on parliamentary polls and the referendum and said the people are much aware about the referendum since they use social media.

About postal ballot, Shafiqul Alam said about 7 lakh Bangladeshi diaspora got registered as of Wednesday to cast their votes through postal ballot- ever the first initiative by the government to allow participation of expatriates Bangladeshis in elections.
