DHAKA, Jan 12, 2026 (BSS)- BNP Standing Committee Member Begum Selima Rahman today said Bangladesh had achieved the international recognition as emerging tiger during tenures of Begum Khaleda Zia who served the nation as Prime Minister three times.
She said, " Khaleda Zia's contributions to education, health, women and child development, and technological progress are undeniable. It was during her tenure that Bangladesh gained international recognition as an 'Emerging Tiger'."
Selima Rahman made the remarks as the chief guest at a condolence meeting and prayer session organized by the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Navin Dal at the National Press Club, praying for the salvation of the soul of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Begum Selima Rahman said that Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia was a symbol of Bangladesh's democracy, independence, and sovereignty. "With her passing, the nation has lost a courageous and fighting leader, whose inspiration continues to drive the people of Bangladesh to fight for democracy."
She further said that Khaleda Zia was not only the leader of BNP, she was the 'Mother of Democracy'. "Although she is no longer with us today, her thoughts, ideals, and fighting spirit continue to shine like a bright star in the hearts of the people of Bangladesh," the veteran BNP leader added.
Selima Rahman said that after the Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Begum Khaleda Zia had no personal desire to enter into politics. She took up the leadership out of necessity to uphold the country's independence, democracy, and keep the BNP united. Throughout her long political life, she repeatedly faced persecution, oppression, and imprisonment, but never bowed.
"Even during captivity with her two young children in 1971, Begum Khaleda Zia demonstrated firm resolve and patriotism. In a Pakistani prison, she continued her struggles uncompromisingly, which remains a unique example for women."
Selima Rahman further said that many talk about reforms today, but the foundation for genuine reforms was laid by President Ziaur Rahman through his 19-point programme. Later, Begum Khaleda Zia presented the 2030 Vision for national and human resource development. Continuing this legacy, the party's current Chairman Tarique Rahman has placed before the nation a 31-point state reform proposal.
Selima said, "Today, the BNP is united under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. The ideals and sacrifices of Begum Khaleda Zia have become our strength. With this strength, democracy will be restored in the country and a free, fair, and acceptable election will be ensured."
Humayun Ahmed Talukder, founder and president of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Navin Dal, presided over the event and conducted by General Secretary Mohammad Sohail Rana.
Moreover, BNP's volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu and former MP Nur Afroz Begum Jyoti spoke in the event.
