Auto-rickshaw puller killed in Jatrabari road accident

DHAKA, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS) - A battery-run auto-rickshaw puller was killed 
after being hit by a covered van in Jatrabari area of the capital early this 
morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Sagar Hossain, 45. 

The accident occurred at around 5:15 am on Wednesday in front of the Kajla 
Foot Over Bridge in Jatrabari.

According to witnesses, a reckless covered van rammed into the auto-rickshaw, 
leaving the driver critically injured. 

His left hand and right leg were severed in the collision. Taking advantage 
of the situation, the driver of the covered van fled the scene immediately 
after the accident.

The rickshaw passenger, Nayan Mia, who was also injured in the crash, said, 
"This morning, I was carrying wooden goods on the rickshaw while a speeding 
covered van suddenly hit us. The rickshaw driver was badly crushed under the 
van."

Locals rescued the injured rickshaw puller and rushed him to the Dhaka 
Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) emergency department, where the on-duty 
doctor declared him dead at around 6:15am.

Nayan Mia added that the deceased rickshaw puller was a resident of the 
Shanir Akhra area of the capital.

Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said that the 
body has been kept at the DMCH morgue and the incident has been reported to 
Jatrabari Police Station.

Further legal action is being processed in this regard, he added.
