CHATTOGRAM, Jan 22, 2026 (BSS) – As part of countrywide election campaign, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit Chattogram on January 24 after a gap of nearly 21 years.
Local BNP leaders and activists are working from dawn to dusk to ensure the success of the visit and the rally scheduled to be held at the Railway Pologround at 10am on Sunday, setting a target of drawing at least 1.5 million people.
Apart from central and local leaders, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman will address the rally as the chief guest.
BNP Chattogram City unit Member Secretary Nazimur Rahman told BSS that no stone would be left unturned in the preparation process so that the much-awaited grand rally of Tarique Rahman becomes a historic one, similar to his homecoming reception held in Dhaka.
“We expect around 15 lakh people, including party workers and supporters, to attend the Pologround rally,” he said.
A high level of excitement and enthusiasm has been observed among leaders, activists and supporters at all tiers of the BNP and its various front organisations over the maiden visit of Tarique Rahman since assuming office as party chairman.
Under the initiatives of BNP units of Chattogram city and south and north districts, various front organisations—including Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, Sramik Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Krishak Dal—have taken extensive preparations to make the visit and the grand rally a success.
Tarique Rahman last visited Chattogram in 2005 when he attended a public meeting at Laldighi Maidan after launching a day-long, hectic campaign across the city in support of BNP’s then Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) mayoral candidate.
Former BNP city president and mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, Dr Shahadat Hossain, said that all-out preparations centring the upcoming rally at the Polo Ground Maidan are going on smoothly.
The ground is being renovated and stage construction has already begun. Dr Hossain is overseeing the logistics, security and infrastructure arrangements for the event, emphasising that the rally is not merely a political gathering but a demonstration of the people’s determination to restore democracy.
Nazimur Rahman said that various sub-committees have been formed and a series of preparatory meetings have been held at ward-level units.
BNP candidates in 16 constituencies in Chattogram have mobilised their full organisational strength to bring a huge number of people from their respective areas to the Pologround gathering, party insiders said.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to arrive in Chattogram on January 24 and will address the rally at the Polo Ground before returning to Dhaka via Sitakunda–Mirsarai, Noakhali and Feni.
