DHAKA, Feb 3, 2026 (BSS) - Slum dwellers of Dhaka-17, the electoral constituency of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, have expressed support for him, describing him as a member of their own family and pledging to stand by him.
Speaking at an exchange meeting with local women supporters in the seven-storey area near I.P.H. School and College in Ward No. 20 of the constituency, the slum residents said they considered themselves his guardians and family members. They voiced their determination to work for his victory in Dhaka-17, which they referred to as a "seat of love," and expressed hope to see him become Prime Minister.
Tarique Rahman has no mother, no father; we are his mother and father. We will always stand by him as his family, said several participants at the meeting.
Selina Rahman, a resident of the slum, said Tarique Rahman's pledge to introduce a Family Card resonated strongly with them. "By voting for the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol, we want to become part of his family," she said.
Women from the Sat Tola slum also spoke at the meeting, saying that they often lack permanent housing. "When people come to us seeking votes, we tell them we have no place of our own. By voting for Tarique Rahman in Dhaka-17, we want to secure a permanent place to live," they said.
Abdus Salam, BNP's chief election coordinator for Dhaka-17, was present at the meeting. He highlighted the contributions of BNP founder and former president Shaheed Ziaur Rahman, describing him as a capable statesman who fulfilled his promises through initiatives such as canal excavation, expansion of the garment industry, and overseas employment opportunities.
Salam also mentioned former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia's initiatives for women's development, including free education for girls up to secondary level, stipends for meritorious students up to higher secondary level, and increased participation of women in various sectors.
Drawing a parallel, he said Tarique Rahman has proposed introducing a Family Card to support women at the household level, along with Health Cards to ensure proper healthcare. "If elected, he will implement these commitments for women's empowerment," Salam added.
